Our Inspection Checklist: What Sets Our Pre-Owned Trucks Apart from the Rest

Did you know that in 55% of truck accidents resulting in injury, the vehicle involved had at least one mechanical failure?  This is exactly why buying pre-owned trucks requires more than just a glance under the hood. You need complete confidence in the vehicle’s safety, reliability, and performance.

Therefore, at Big Truck & Equipment Sales, we don’t believe in “good enough.” We hold every unit to high standards with a rigorous inspection checklist. We’ve built our reputation by refusing to cut corners, and that’s exactly why our pre-owned trucks stand apart from the rest.

What Our Inspection Covers (And Why It Matters)

1. Engine Health and Performance

We start with what matters most—the heart of the truck. Our mechanics check for:

  • Compression levels
  • Oil pressure
  • Coolant leaks
  • Emissions compliance
  • Turbocharger operation (if applicable)

We also look at service history where available, to catch signs of past neglect. If the engine doesn’t deliver consistent output under load, it doesn’t cut.

2. Transmission and Drive train

Transmission issues are among the costliest repairs on a used vehicle. So, we don’t take risks. We test for:

  • Smooth gear shifting (manual or automatic)
  • Transfer case performance (for 4WD units)
  • Axle and differential wear
  • PTO operation on service vehicles

If the drive system doesn’t operate as expected, we address it immediately—no exceptions.

3. Hydraulics and Operational Components

From used vacuum trucks to used bucket trucks, hydraulic systems are mission-critical. We inspect:

  • Hydraulic pump pressure
  • Hose integrity and connections
  • Cylinder responsiveness
  • Valve function
  • Boom and arm movement (for aerial or crane trucks)

Every feature must operate at full efficiency to pass our standard.

4. Electrical Systems

We go beyond just flipping a switch. Our checklist includes:

  • Lighting (work lights, beacons, brake lights)
  • Battery voltage and alternator output
  • Control panels and sensors
  • Boom control switches (for bucket trucks)
  • Circuit integrity and grounding

No flickering, no shorts—just clean and consistent electrical performance.

5. Brakes and Safety Systems

Commercial trucks are no good without dependable braking. We evaluate:

  • Brake pad wear
  • Drum/disc condition
  • ABS function
  • Emergency brake reliability
  • Air brake systems (if equipped)

DOT compliance isn’t just a regulation—it’s a requirement for every sale.

6. Chassis and Suspension

We inspect the frame for:

  • Signs of corrosion or cracks
  • Proper alignment
  • Suspension responsiveness
  • Spring and shock absorber condition

The frame must be structurally sound—period.

7. Tires and Wheels

Tires aren’t cheap, and worn-out treads can be dangerous. We check for:

  • Tread depth (must meet safety standards)
  • Uneven wear (could signal alignment or suspension problems)
  • Rim condition and lug torque

No dry rot, no cupping—just ready-to-roll rubber.

8. Body Condition and Functionality

We evaluate the exterior and cab interior:

  • Doors, mirrors, and glass
  • Lifts, booms, or tanks (depending on truck type)
  • Warning labels and decals
  • HVAC system
  • Cab cleanliness and seat condition

We don’t just aim for clean—we aim for functional, safe, and operational.
